Consistently Inconsistent

February 10th, 2008 by James

Two games against Atlantic Division rivals, two loses. The Flyers now sit in 6th place in the Eastern Conference and 4 points behind the Penguins in the Atlantic Division. For the past several games, a few different Flyers Teams seem to show up each night. There is the team that comes out and utterly dominates their opponent. A few times we have seen that one that lets their opponent roll over them, and it gives us flashbacks of last year. And then there is the team that plays strong in some parts of the game and lets up in others.

Today we saw the last one on the list. The Flyers came out strong against a streaking Pittsburgh squad and got on the scoreboard early. But soon let up and let Pittsburgh skate all over them and take the lead. They came out strong in the 3rd Period and got within a goal, but slowly let up and Pittsburgh scored again. You can not let up against the Penguins right now. They have been on fire since Sidney Crosby has gotten hurt. This team finally decided to play with some urgency in the last few minutes, like we’ve seen so many times before this year.

Where is the consistency? Where is the sense of urgency throughout an entire game? I keep mentioning how tight the Eastern Conference is this year. This is one of the things the NHL wanted with a salary cap. You can no longer sleepwalk into the playoffs. A few more weeks of playing like this, the Flyers may end the season with a winning record, unlike last year, but will not make the playoffs, like last year.

More bad news on the injury front. Braydon Coburn left yesterday’s game with an injury to his buttocks and will be out for up to 4 weeks. He tore a blood vessel and had to be taken to the hospital to get the hemorrhaging under control. Simon Gagne left today’s game. All that has been reported is that he was not feeling well, no other details.

Rumors on the Peter Forsberg front are that the Flyers have given him a deal, they are just waiting for him to give the word that he is ready to return. 610 WIP was discussing that yesterday evening.
