Flyers Lose to Senators in Shootout

February 20th, 2008 by James

The Flyers’ downward spiral continued last night in Ottawa. The first two periods were absolutely dismal and the Flyers were only able to muster 6 shots…for both periods combined. A late second period shorthanded goal by Kimmo Timonen seemed to energize the team and they came out and got an early third period goal from Scottie Upshall. With the score tied at 2, the Flyers dominated the 3rd period, showing signs of the team that could be. However, they were not able to solve Senators goaltender Ray Emery.

The third period and following overtime were absolutely exciting. But since neither team scored, the game would be decided by a shootout. In my opinion, a shootout is the dumbest way to solve a tie hockey game. If two goaltenders stand on their head, why must one lose? But anyway…the game went to a shootout, which the Flyers are dreadful at, and that wouldn’t end last night. Ottawa would win the shootout and the game.

The Flyers’ first round pick in 2006, Claude Giroux, played in his first NHL game last night, and was one of the Flyers’ shooters in the shootout. He looked good.
