Flyers Lose Crucial Game to Boston Bruins

March 15th, 2008 by James

Coming into this afternoon’s game, the Flyers were one point behind the Boston Bruins who were in the seventh spot in the Eastern Conference. The Flyers’ hold on the 8 spot was a tedious one, with the Buffalo Sabres surging and only 2 points behind. A win in regulation would have moved the Flyers up to seventh place and given them some breathing room.

Philadelphia started this game a bit soft, allowing the Bruins to control play through most of the first period. That changed in the second period with the Flyers taking over the play and the lead with goals by Mike Richards and Danny Briere. After missing 9 games with a hamstring injury, Richards appeared not to show any rust. The combination of Briere and Vaclav Prospal is also showing some great chemistry with several offensive chances.

The Flyers, however, would not be able to hold they lead they took into the third period. After failing to score on a Power Play with 4 minutes remaining in the game, the Bruins were able to mount some pressure and score with under half a minute remaining. And in the overtime period, after Jeff Carter was stoned by Boston goaltender Tim Thomas, the Bruins completed the comeback to hold onto the seventh spot in the Eastern Conference.

This game was all about missed opportunities. They were not able to take advantage of the Power Play opportunities, going 0-4 for the day. There were multiple scoring chances and the Flyers were not being able to finish. And, this game was an opportunity to move up in the standings, but they could not hold the lead.

Derian Hatcher also left the game after blocking a shot. All they would say was it was a right leg injury.
