Today the NHL announced its Three Stars of the Week. Number 3 is Flyers center Danny Briere. Here’s what the NHL had to say:
Briere recorded six points (three goals, three assists) as the Flyers (38-28-10, 86 points) posted three consecutive victories and climbed to seventh place in the Eastern Conference. Briere notched one assist in a 3-2 victory over the Atlanta Thrashers Mar. 18, tallied two goals in a 4-3 shootout win over the New York Rangers Mar. 21 and notched one goal and two assists in a 4-1 victory over the New York Islanders Mar. 23. Briere ranks second on the Flyers in scoring with 68 points (29 goals, 39 assists) in 75 games.
Briere came into this season as the big offseason signing by the Flyers. And while he is near the top of the team in scoring, his -21 hasn’t sat well with the fans as of late. In fact, he has heard boos in the Wachovia Center, his home arena.
However, since the acquisition of Vaclav Prospal, Briere’s game has stepped up a notch. The two have built some great chemistry, and are really feeding off of each other. The most dramatic difference I’ve seen in Briere is that he seems to be charging more toward the net than he was earlier in the season.
Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin was named first star, and Maple Leafs goaltender Vesa Toskala garnered the other Star, even after this “save.”
