Flyers Come Close, But Still Can’t Win In New Jersey

March 28th, 2008 by James

Dating back more than 10 years, the Philadelphia Flyers have had trouble when it would involve playing the New Jersey Devils. That would be no different this year. So far this year the Flyers have 1 win in 6 games. To make matters worse, Philadelphia hasn’t won in New Jersey in 11 games.

The Flyers have been playing better as of late, winning 4 out of their last 5 games. The Devils have been losers of 5 straight including a Thursday night loss to the Rangers in New York.

The Flyers came out hard and controlled the game for most of the first period and opened the scoring with a goal by Vaclav Prospal. However, two Devils goals late in the period would give New Jersey life. They would also add another goal early in the second period to make the score 3 - 1.

The Flyers had a never-say-die attitude tonight and would not relent and pushed back on the Devils. A clutch goal by Jim Dowd in the second period would pull the Flyers within a goal. Randy Jones would score in the third period to tie the score.

But the Devils would not go away quietly either, scoring with 5 minutes remaining in the third period to pull ahead. Mike Knuble would save the game with a goal in the final minute to push the game to overtime.

A scoreless overtime period would lead to a shootout to decide the game. The Flyers would get goals from Jeff Carter and Danny Briere. The Devils scored on all three of their chances and would walk away with the win, denying a Flyers win in New Jersey for another season. These two teams will meet up for one more game in Philadelphia on next Friday, April 4.
