After a shootout loss to the New Jersey Devils on Friday night, the Philadelphia Flyers were right back at it Saturday night on Long Island. This season the Flyers have dominated the New York Islanders who at this point are out of the playoffs. The Islanders are a team that is playing for pride at this point and for jobs for next season.
With Martin Biron playing the first of the back-to-back games, Antero Nittymaki got the start tonight. The Flyers looked tired in the first period, with several errant passes and a few players getting their signals crossed. The Islanders would take the lead with a goal in the first period and add to it with a goal in the second period.
However, just like the night before, the Flyers didn’t quit. In the second period they started to pick their game up and a goal by Danny Briere, his 31st of the season, got them back on track. Briere is one goal away from tying his career high.
Joffrey Lupul continued the scoring in the third period. It was his 19th of the season and first in nine games. After the Islanders took a 3-2 lead, it was Mike Richards who scored with 4 minutes remaining to tie it back up again.
The Flyers would have another scoreless overtime, which would take them back to where they were the previous night, a shootout. Nittymaki was able to stop all three Islanders shooters. The first two shooters for the Flyers, Richards and Jeff Carter, were unable to get a puck past New York goaltender Wade Dubielewicz. But it was the third time that was the charm for the Flyers. Danny Briere, who got the first goal of the night, iced the game with the only shootout goal.
The win gave the Flyers the crucial two points they needed. Philadelphia moved a point ahead of Boston and are now tied with the New York Rangers with 91 points.
