It’s Gut Check Time

For the Flyers, this is it. There are three games left in the season and their playoff future is not yet secure. Only 9 points separates first place from eighth, and it’s only 12 points between first and tenth. The Washington Capitals sit in ninth place with 90 points the Buffalo Sabres are in tenth place with 88 points. Neither have been eliminated from playoff contention.

Coming up for Philadelphia are two games against the first place Pittsburgh Penguins, the first of which is Wednesday night in Pittsburgh. The second is on Sunday, April 6th at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia to close out the regular season. In between is a game against the New Jersey Devils on Friday, April 4th, in Philadelphia as well.

Last season, the Flyers were swept in the season series by Pittsburgh. This year, The Flyers came out and took the first four meetings against the Penguins, but have dropped the last two, including a 7-1 trouncing by the Evgeni Malkin led squad. What was funny about that game was the Penguins had no problem running up the score, but didn’t like it when the Flyers did it to them earlier in the season.

If the playoffs were to start today, the Flyers would be matched up against Pittsburgh in the first round.

The Flyers got some good news on Monday with word that RJ Umberger will return to the lineup for Wednesday’s game against Pittsburgh.

The Flyers are currently sitting in 8th place with 91 points and the Boston Bruins are just above them. Only one loss over the next week could knock either team out and let Washington in. The Capitals are 9-1-0 in their last ten games. Alexander Ovechkin is leading the charge in Washington and chants of “MVP” can be heard from the crowd. On Monday night, Ovechkin scored his league leading 63rd goal.

The reality for the Flyers is, the playoffs have already started.
