The Flyers didn’t waste much time this offseason working to improve their defense. On Friday Philadelphia Flyers GM Paul Holmgren announced they acquired defenseman Danny Syvret from the Edmonton Oilers. According to Holmgren,
“Danny is a puck-moving defenseman that sees the ice well and will improve our depth,” said Holmgren in making the announcement. “He had some success playing with Jeff Carter and Mike Richards at the 2005 World Junior Championship as a member of the Team Canada.
In 2 seasons in the Edmonton organization, he has split his time between the NHL and the AHL’s Hamilton Bulldogs and Grand Rapids Griffins. He has played 26 NHL games.
This move is aimed at increasing the depth of the Flyers’ defense corps which was lacking at times during the season and subsequent playoff run. While Potulny is a promising young forward, the Flyers are very deep at that position. This will not be last move this offseason by Holmgren to increase the Flyers’ defensive capabilities.

Yawn. Next week will really ramp up, with both the RFA negotiations and possible maneuvering around the draft.
Looks like we have the 27 pick, so it’s totally random at this point to try and pick the guy. I was hoping there might be a young Goalie worthy of the pick. The cupboard is pretty bare with regards to the net.
Agreed, news has been slow lately. I’m hoping that on the Carter, Umberger, Jones fronts that no news is good news.
Holmgren has done a decent job of drafting guys that fit into the organization well with later picks.
