Not Exactly The Start We Were Hoping For

October 12th, 2008 by James

The Flyers opened the 2008-09 season last night against the New York Rangers looking to follow up their run to the Eastern Conference Finals. This year’s slogan is “Hungry For More.” The Flyers looked anything but hungry in the first 20 minutes of the game, you could even call them anorexic.

The Flyers gave up 4 first period goals on 14 shots. Martin Biron, who looked like he was in midseason form during the preseason, was pulled before the first intermission. New Flyers Captain Mike Richards took on Brandon Dubinsky late in the first period in an attempt to rally his team. It worked. The momentum started for the Flyers in the second period.

The top line of Richards, Simon Gagne, and Danny Briere was dangerous and accounted for 2 of the Flyers 3 goals. The flat team from the first period went on a binge late in the game. However, Rangers backup netminder Steve Valiquette was the equalizer and made several key save to hold on to the victory for the Rangers. Let’s just hope the Flyers don’t make a habit of spotting teams a 4 point lead early in games, or it could be a long season.
