After Being Winless In 6, The Flyers Win 2

October 26th, 2008 by James

Jeff Carter

After going 0-3-3 through the first 6 games of the season, the Flyers took both games of the home and home against the New Jersey Devils. The first win of the season came Friday night in New Jersey, 6-3. Mike Richards set a career high with 4 assists. The power play accounted for two goals. Scott Hartnell had two goals.

The second came Saturday afternoon in thrilling overtime fashion. Jeff Carter got the game winner seconds after a goal from Simon Gagne was disallowed. Some idiot threw a sink bomb on the ice in the direction of the New Jersey bench right after Gagne’s “goal.” The bench’s cleared and play was halted until the smoke cleared.

The game time was changed from 7:00 pm to 4:00 pm due to game 3 of the World Series at Citizens Bank Park. During the game the Flyers organization and players had messages of congratulations and good luck to the Phillies. Phillies/Flyers rally towels were handed out and the AT&T Pavilion remained open after the game so fans could stay to watch the World Series. Classy moves from the Flyers organization.

Even though the record isn’t much to look at, here are some bright spots:

Mike Richards has 10 points is 8 games
Simon Gagne has 5 goals in 7 games
Jeff Carter has 6 goals in 8 games.
Luca Sbisa has shown the poise of a veteran at the age of 18. The Flyers have a tough decision ahead, whether to send him to juniors or keep him with the club. If they are still not sure, they have one game left to decide.

Oh yeah, at the time of this writing, the Phillies and the City of Philadelphia are one win away from a Championship. It’s been 25 long years. Go Phillies!
