You knew a move was brewing. While the Flyers have been showing some improvement, they still look a bit listless. They are near the top in the league in goals scored, but at the bottom in goals allowed. That will make for a very frustrating season. The defense has also been hurt with injuries to Ryan Parent and Randy Jones.
Today Paul Holmgren made a deal to acquire defenseman Matt Carle from Tampa Bay in exchange for a pair of Steves, Steve Downie and Steve Eminger.
From the Flyers website,
“Matt Carle is a good young defenseman and we are thrilled to add a player with his abilities to our roster,” said Holmgren in making the announcement. “He will add skill and speed to our lineup and should fit in great with our team.”
Carle, 24, recorded a goal and an assist for two points and six penalty minutes in 12 games for the Lightning this season. He is second on the team in blocked shots (27) and third on the team in average time on ice (21:57 minutes per game).
When the Flyers picked up Steve Eminger from the Washington Capitals at the draft, I thought it was a good move to improve the defense. However, as the season got moving, I wasn’t overly impressed with Eminger. This is no big loss for the Flyers.
Steve Downie, while he has a lot of potential, he lets his emotions get the best of him and prevents him from playing smart. If he is able to get to get his emotions under control, I bet a conversation Downie, Holmgren, and Stevens have had more than a few times, he will be a very good player.
