As last night’s game progressed, the tension seemed to pick up. The “friction”, in Bill Clement’s terms, between the Flyers and the Canadiens in the playoffs is nothing new. Here are a few examples.
1987 Conference Finals
At the time, Claude Lemeiux of the Canadiens was in his second year, and a pregame ritual of his would be to shoot a puck into the other team’s net after warmups concluded. As the series moved on, this act by Lemeiux began to irrate the Flyers. In game six, Ed Hospodar and Chico Resch waited after warmups for Lemeiux to shoot the puck and then confronted him and Shayne Corson. Most of the players had gone into the dressing rooms, but soon piled out. Some where half dressed. Only two players did not join the fracas, the two starting goaltenders Ron Hextall and Brian Hayward. The start of the game was delayed 17 minutes.
1989 Conference Finals
First, there was this vicious hit on Brian Propp from Chris Chelios in game one of the series.
Which resulted in Ron Hextall jumping Chelios in game 6 as Chelios skated into the Flyers zone after an offsides call.
