The rumors are true as it was officially announced that on January 1, 2010, the Flyers and Bruins will face-off at Fenway Park in the 2010 Winter Classic. If the NHL was actually trying to keep this a secret until today, they failed miserably. This has quickly become a major annual event for the NHL. I makes the All-Star game pretty much an afterthought. After this year’s Winter Classic, which brought the NHL it’s highest ratings in more than 30 years, there was talk of multiple outdoor games on New Year’s Day or at least multiple outdoor games during the season. I’d have to disagree with adding any more than one outdoor game a year. The fact that there is only one a year makes it unique and special. By having any more than one a year would make the concept boring and played out. I’ve been to Fenway before and it has an atmosphere all it’s own. And with the past history between the Bruins and the Flyers, this game is going to be great. They haven’t announced the ticket arrangements yet, but that isn’t stopping me from booking a hotel room. Worst case scenario, if I don’t get a ticket, I cancel the reservation. In addition to this announcement, the NHL also released the 2009 – 2010 schedule. The Flyers will start the year on the road in Carolina against the Hurricanes on October 2. The home opener will be on October 6 against the Washington Capitals. |
