A day after a gutsy comeback against the Eastern Conference leading Boston Bruins, the Philadelphia Flyers were set to take on the Atlanta Thrashers, a team they have not lost to since 2005. In net for the Flyers was Antero Niittymaki who was looking to improve his record against Atlanta to 13 – 0-0. The case of the flu that has been wrecking havoc in the Flyers’ locker room continued to keep players out of the lineup. Mike Richards and Scottie Upshall were out again for today’s game. The line of Jeff Carter, Joffrey Lupul, and Scott Hartnell supplied all of the offense. Carter opened the scoring with a laser of wrist shot in the first period. Lupul added to the Flyers lead with a goal in the opening minute of the second period. Carter put the Flyers up 3 – 0 with a power play goal early in the third period. It was his second of the game, and his 100th career NHL goal. At that point it looked like the Flyers had the game wrapped up, but that would be no fun, so they decided to make things interesting. Two Atlanta power play goals later, the Flyers lead was cut to 1. The Thrashers pressed and played with desperation, but the Flyers were able to hold on for the win. |
