It was a New York weekend for the Flyers. It started off with a Saturday afternoon matinee against the Islanders. The Flyers came out strong and took it to the Islanders, scoring two goals only 44 seconds apart. However a sitting back in the second period and early in the third led to the Islanders coming within a goal of tying the game. However, a 3 goal burst during a 67 second span, including a Simon Gagne penalty shot, prevented a collapse against the last place Islanders. Highlights Sunday saw a trip up to Madison Square Garden to take on the New York Rangers, a team the Flyers haven’t seen since the opener of the season. Coming into the game, the Flyers led the Rangers by a point in the Atlantic Division. The Eastern Conference is a tight race, only 11 points separates 2nd and 8th place (the Bruins are running away with first place). The Flyers dominated the majority of the game. Claude Giroux opened the scoring about half way through the first with his third goal of the year, his second in two games. He ended the day with a goal and 2 assists, his first 3 point game. Mike Richards started a second period Flyers’ scoring frenzy with his 20th of the year on a breakaway while the Flyers were shorthanded two skaters. Richards is the first NHL player to have 3 career shorthanded goals while down 3 skaters to 5. Matt Carle, Glen Metropolit and Mike Knuble all added goals within a 2 minute period to give the Flyers a 5 goal lead. Henrik Lundqvist was yanked after giving up 4 goals before the halfway mark of the game. The Rangers would add a goal in the second period and another in the third. Those two goals and a frenetic pace in the third were not enough and the Flyers held on for the win. |
