What has been

Carter appeared in all 82 of of the Flyers’ regular season games last season, tallying 29 goals and 53 points. In 17 playoff games, the London, Ontario native had six goals and five assists and helped lead the team to the Eastern Conference final.

He was set to become a restricted free agent next week.

“Jeff is a terrific young player who has come up through our organization, and we believe he is only going to get better,” said Holmgren. “It is a priority for us to keep our young core of players intact, and signing Jeff allows us to do that.”

“I’m very excited to be staying in Philadelphia,” said Carter. “We have great group of guys on this team and I can’t wait to get back on the ice and continue where we left off last season.”

Flyers 2008 Draft Round Up

June 21st, 2008 by James
Respond

Luca Sbisa Drafted By Flyers
The Flyers started out draft day by making a major move. They sent RJ Umberger to the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for the 19th and 167th overall picks in the draft. The deal appears to be a move to free up cap space to bolster the defensive depth of a team that is very deep at the forward position.

They used that 19th pick to draft Luca Sbisa, defenseman from the Lethbridge Hurricanes of the Western Hockey League. The scouting report on Sbisa says:

Luca is a poised and, sometimes, too poised a defenseman. One would say that a lot of times his calmness with the puck is misinterpreted as either slowness or laziness; that’s not the case with Luca. He is a smart player who moves the puck at the right time and carries the puck correctly, supports the rush and is adjusting very well to the North American game. He needs continued adjustment to the North American game, he isn’t afraid under a forecheck, but sometimes under a hard forecheck of one or two players of the opposition, he will tend to throw the puck away too early. As much as the poise comes in to play with the puck on his stick, when the puck isn’t on his stick that will be an area that will get better with time.

The Flyers also had another first round pick, the 27th overall, and decided to send it to Washington in exchange for defenseman Steve Eminger and third round pick in this year’s draft.

Steve Eminger Traded To Flyers

Of Eminger, Flyers GM Paul Holmgren said:

“Steve is a player we’ve always liked,” said Holmgren. “He’s a former teammate of Mike Richards in Kitchener, so we those two have a connection. He’s still just 25 years old. I don’t believe he’s reached his peak yet and still has a ways to go. We think he’s going to be a nice fit.”

The Flyers posted an interview with Holmgren after all of the action of the first round.

The Flyers’ next pick didn’t come until the 3rd round when they picked up defenseman Marc-Andre Bourdon from the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

The Flyers’ second third round pick was used to draft goaltender Jacob DeSerres from the Seattle Thunderbirds of the Western Hockey League.

The Flyers rounded out draft day by selecting center Zac Rinaldo from the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors of the Ontario Hockey League in the sixth round and goaltender Joacim Eriksson from Brynas IF in the Swedish Under-20 League.

RJ Umberger Dealt To Columbus Blue Jackets

RJ Umberger Traded to Columbus Blue Jackets
This evening the Flyers sent center RJ Umberger as well as the 119th pick overall to the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for the 19th and 67th picks in this year’s draft.

Rumors have been swirling that the Flyers were able to sign Jeff Carter to a 3 year deal at about $5 million a year. The Flyers still have yet to confirm this. If true, that would leave very little under the cap to sign Umberger as well.

This past season, Umberger had 13 goals and 37 assists and followed that up with 10 goals and 5 assists in 17 playoff games.

As of this point, the 19th pick has yet to be made, so it still remains to be seen who the Flyers will get for Umberger.

Jeff Carter Still A Flyer?
Just a few days ago, the Delaware County Daily Times was discussing how the Flyers and Restricted Free Agent - To Be Jeff Carter were far apart in negotiations. Well, the rumors coming out of Canada are saying that Carter and the Flyers have gotten a deal done.

Sources are telling Sportsnet that Carter has agreed to a three-year deal with the Philadelphia Flyers that is believed to pay him no less than $15 million.

The Flyers have yet to formally announce anything, but if this turns out to be true, that means the Flyers have gotten 1 of their three big Restricted Free Agents locked up before July 1st.

Flyers Say Goodbye To Vinny Prospal, Again.

June 18th, 2008 by James
Respond

Vinny Prospal Traded back to Tampa Bay Lightning
Today the Flyers dealt Vaclav Prospal back to the Tampa Bay Lightning. The fact that Prospal is leaving the Flyers again should come as no surprise to anyone. He made it no secret that he enjoyed playing in a warm weather city and wanted to go back to one this summer. There were also rumors floating around last week that he was interested in returning to Tampa Bay since John Tortorella was fired.

Even if Prospal wanted to stay here, there was slim chance the Flyers would have the cap space to sign him and other free agents Jeff Carter, RJ Umberger, and Randy Jones. So with all that in mind, GM Paul Holmgren was able to get some draft picks for him, namely a seventh round pick this year and a conditional pick in the 2009 draft. According to Holmgren,

“Vinny really didn’t express much of an interest in coming back and playing for us next season,” said Holmgren in making the announcement. “His heart is elsewhere.”
